Susan Harwood Capacity Building Training Grant
In support of the US Department of Labor’s efforts to foster and promote the welfare of workers, CHS developed and tested a training curriculum to provide health and safety training for employed English- and Spanish-speaking food industry workers with low literacy and numeracy skills. Training focused on reducing the incidence of illness and injury and provided information to help workers understand their job safety and health rights and the regulations and standards of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The curriculum, in English and Spanish, is available on the OSHA website.
- Conducted a comprehensive needs assessment of the target population through focus groups, face-to-face interviews, and hard-copy and online surveys;
- Created curriculum training materials and training evaluation instruments; and
- Field-tested curriculum materials and revised them based on feedback.
- Trained 30 food industry workers who were members of the target population.
