Center for Human Services Opens New Office in Vineland, New Jersey
The Center for Human Services (CHS) held an open house on Tuesday, October 18th, to debut its new office in Vineland, New Jersey.
The event began with a welcome by Louis A. Marino, Senior Manager-Project Director of CHS NJ, followed by an overview of CHS’s mission and history by Barbara N. Turner, President of CHS. Robert Romano, the Mayor of Vineland, spoke about Vineland’s cultural richness and community service efforts, after which he presented CHS with a certificate of recognition.
Karina Calva, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Mexican Consulate in Philadelphia, presented CHS with the IME Becas Award. And James Edwards, VP of Community Relations for CompleteCare Health Network, Inc., discussed the collaboration of health centers and non-profits as an approach to treatment.
Members of the CHS-led South Jersey Families Re-Connected Coalition also attended the event, including Jose “Tony” Melendez, Executive Director of Casa PRAC, who says that CHS is a welcome addition to Vineland because CHS recognizes the value and importance of non-profits working together.
CHS has been active in southern New Jersey since 1988, with its first office in Bridgeton. Within the past three years alone, CHS has served nearly 4,000 Cumberland County residents through its various programs.
“But many residents were traveling from Vineland to Bridgeton to receive CHS services,” says Marino.
This realization was the catalyst for opening the Vineland office, which provides family literacy services, English as a Second Language training, vocational rehabilitation for migrant and seasonal farmworkers with disabilities, and support for women of color living with HIV/AIDS.
CHS accomplishes much of its work through collaborations with community, government, and private-sector organizations, many of whom showed their support by attending the Vineland open house.
The event also garnered media coverage from Cumberland County’s newspaper “The Daily Journal”: http://www.thedailyjournal.com/article/20111019/NEWS01/310190028.
